Q: What does orthostatic mean?
A: The term is used when blood pressure is measured. While lying down, the blood pressure is measured, and the patient is asked to stand up, a repeat blood pressure measurement is taken immediately as the patient stands up. The body adjusts to the quick change in position without a significant drop in the blood pressure. If the blood presure falls , the patient is said to have orthostatic (or upon standing) hypotension. There are many reasons for the drop in blood pressure that the doctor then needs to investigate.

Q: What kind of care is provided for newborns (right after birth) at your hospital?
A: Routine care and daily examinations are given by the Pediatrician, neonatal screening is done for Hemoglobin, blood type, G6PD, Thyriod and PKU are done also. The Pediatrician attends the delivery of all C sections, and whenever there is need as defined by the clinical situation at the time of delivery. Newborns with jaundice are treated with phototherapy when the jaundice level is high.

Q: My father's voice has some problems. Actually he can't speak loud enough. We have consulted a doctor. He explained that his vocal cords were swollen and it will take time to heal with medications. They also tried Laryngoscopy, but I think that was manual. Today he is going to consult a doctor for another rigid Laryngoscopy. It has almost been a month since he was suffering from this problem. I just would like to know what can be the possible causes for the problem? What would be your suggestions for treatment?
A: You said that your father has vocal cord swelling, as his doctor told you, which usually occurs with a heavy smoker patient, or in case of trauma. Also the patient complains of Hoarseness. The plan in such a condition is to do diagnostic rigid endoscope to see the vocal cords under the microscope and then the doctor will decide to do vocal cord surgery if it is only oedema (raink's oedema) or take a biopsy from the vocal cord if there is suspicion of tumor associated with oedema.

Q: Do you conduct a test for HIV? How much will it cost?
A: We are doing the screening test for HIV which costs BD 19. However, the confirmatory test is western blot for which the sample is sent to France and the total cost for HIV 1 and 2 would be approximately BD 80.
